The
American Skating Derby opened in Richmond, California in June 1975 and
only lasted one ten-game series, Golden State Bombers versus Chicago
Pioneers. Skating ended for about four weeks as the league re-organized
and re-opened as the National Roller Skating League. They skated in
only two cities: Oakland and San Jose, playing in those cities every
other week through the month of September.
The
difference between the two leagues was only one man, Marc Richards.
After an argument with P.R. man Ken Kunzelman and Charlie O’Connell,
Richards pulled out. Buddy Atkinson Sr, a minor investor, pulled the
league back together and opened as the N.R.S.L.
The
A.S.D. skated an imitation of Derby with no speed and no hard blocking.
The N.R.S.L. skated a harder game than its predecessor. Buddy kept
the league going mainly to promote his training center with many rookies
on the team rosters. The entire operation folded in the Fall of 1975.
